Be a Cryptologist II:

Crack codes, decrypt ciphers, and encrypt some of your own for others to solve. In this class, we explore high points in the long history and secret world of cryptology, from Julius Caesar and the Renaissance to William and Elizebeth Friedman and modern digital codes. What is the difference between a code and a cipher? What are the two main kinds of ciphers?

You will create your own cryptologist’s toolkit by making a St. Cyr slide cipher, an Alberti cipher disk, and a Cardano grille. You will learn techniques of frequency analysis and apply them to online cryptograms. Expect to play a short crypto-game each week, too. (Click here more information.)

Ages 10-14

Go for Go-Getters:

Go, the oldest board game in the world, has simple rules but astonishingly complex strategy and tactics. The game allows players to develop powers of concentration, perception, and working memory. It gives them a lifetime of challenge and fun, competition and friendships.

In this class, players will advance their skills by playing games, solving Go problems (“tsumego”), and observing demonstration lessons from the instructor. A handicapped tournament in the final class will allow players to compete for small trophies.
